Here is the Wikipedia entry on ASMR (take it with however many grains of salt you usually require for that source):

Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), sometimes auto sensory meridian response, is a tingling sensation that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. A pleasant form of paresthesia, it has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia and may overlap with frisson.

ASMR signifies the subjective experience of "low-grade euphoria" characterized by "a combination of positive feelings and a distinct static-like tingling sensation on the skin". It is most commonly triggered by specific auditory or visual stimuli, and less commonly by intentional attention control. A genre of videos intended to induce ASMR has emerged, over 13 million of which had been published on YouTube by 2018.

And now I'm one more.

Enjoy your options.

The biggest differences in these videos versus my painting ones is that these are in real-time (my painting videos are time lapse), and the only audio here is the (intentionally and mostly) pencil on paper (my painting videos have music only). Of course, I'll be doing time lapse versions of these pencil drawings as well, especially because I love that format and why I've been making time lapse painting videos for over a year, now.

Because these three portraits are so similar, I decided to gang them up in one extra-long video to sort of lessen the repetition since there is a time lapse video for each drawing (so 4 videos instead of 6).

Here's my first ASMR video:

Carmen Trio A
17" x 14", graphite on Bristol board, 2021

Here's the short time lapse video for this portrait:

Once again, the model here is my friend, Ashley, wearing the dress from the Bizet opera Carmen. We discussed something bird-themed but not necessarily similar, since it wouldn't be hanging in the same room as the other.

She told me he was fascinated by a blue jay that comes by their house so I mentioned that I had been photographing and recording video of the blue jays that gather to feed on the sunflower seeds in our flower bed each fall and that I had some really good footage this year. She liked that idea and I started sifting through my images, finding a moment in a video when four blue jays were on the flowers at the same time. I took a screen grab and moved a couple of birds so they would fit a composition in this vertical orientation and canvas size (made to order!).

The treatment of the sunflowers was heavily inspired by a painting by Celia Sage (with whom I collaborated on our Home project in 2017) that I had looked at for many years which was of a garden teeming with plants. I love the way she paints plants. The way she painted that picture gave me a sense of looking at something wildly organic and thriving, chaotic-but-comprehensible, lush and verdant and decisively alive. I didn't look at it for reference specifically because I wanted to achieve a similar impression of undulating foliage...and I think I came fairly close.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I shot a lot of reference of her in multiple poses, knowing I'd be able to composite them in Photoshop later.

While I had Kimberley wear a different top for each persona in this one, I didn't want to have three legs visible with the same-coloured pants so I painted jeans on the foreground figure. I think the red and blue is a great, rich combination that really pops, leaving the rear "twin" in ghostly pale colours.

My original idea for the background was a very dark, mysterious forest, but the more I looked at it while painting the figures against the roughed-in dark-ish background (over which I would have painted the suggestion of a forest), the more I liked the starkness of that, so I made it definitively black using my usual combination of Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber for greater richness.

Rough sketch.

Like The Last Bridge, this one's tension comes from the threat or potential of something happening: the match lighting the book on fire there, and the balloon's string being cut here. I think it's more interesting than painting the rear twin having already cut the string and the balloon floating further out of frame.

Pencil stage.

Here is the time lapse video of me painting Kimberley and her alter ego:

Milé Murtanovskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378739255436042312noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5639905211617769407.post-40149296025519755762020-08-07T10:40:00.024-04:002020-11-07T11:08:05.705-05:00The Last Bridge

The Last Bridge
28" x 18", oil on canvas, 2020

While rummaging through some of my old photo reference, I was very drawn to this model because her hair was just perfect and looked amazing, with all the curves and swerves. I wanted to have fun just painting her hair, but she was holding a camera in the photo and was looking at it intently, suggesting deep contemplation, so I decided to replace the camera with something more mysterious...

The first thumbnail I drew had her holding some kind of plant, like a thick stalk...something organic and green and undulating. I was planning on keeping her top black for the light green plant to contrast against (plus, everyone looks good in black), but I wasn't yet thinking of a background.

In the sketch above, I took her hands and repositioned them slightly and rotated their orientation to allow for a more pleasing composition with the plant. Below is a sketch where I kept their original angle and position (roughly) and had the stalk going vertical to allow for a portrait-oriented painting (rather than the landscape orientation I would have chosen for the sketch above).

You can see here I started with the plant concept, but then the idea of that giant match came to me. I eventually decided to tilt it away from her, creating a sort of V shape from the top of her head, to her right hand, to the match head. The slight tension that creates is heightened by the jagged lines of the background and the black shapes that are practically buzzing around her head against an orange "halo." The tension is further increased by the book (with blank pages at its dead centre, borrowed from Coriander & Cilantro) and its potential destruction (or salvation).

Then there's her hair which I feel I didn't quite capture the awesomeness of. I'd like to try again someday if I can figure out a reason other than "I want to paint her hair" (which isn't unreasonable, actually...). Maybe I'll put that plant in her hands, but I don't think it'll be a follow-up to this one (unlike Between Maybe and Maybe Not and Furious Blunder).

Here's a time lapse video of me doing a semi-decent
job of painting this hair (plus other stuff):

Milé Murtanovskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378739255436042312noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5639905211617769407.post-61780310507262537772020-07-27T10:55:00.004-04:002020-07-27T11:02:52.068-04:00Margaret Meehan

Margaret Meehan
17" x 14", oil on Bristol board, 2020

Continuing my portrait series of my favourite SCTV characters, here's my rendition of the brilliant Catherine O'Hara as high/night school quiz show contestant Margaret Meehan, who has a frustrating tendency ro answer the questions (always incorrectly) before host Alex Trebel (played by the equally brilliant Eugene Levy) is finished asking them.

Here's the time lapse video of me painting this precocious contestant:

Milé Murtanovskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378739255436042312noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5639905211617769407.post-85480258945509397252020-07-25T15:36:00.011-04:002020-08-29T15:40:30.711-04:00Adept at Adaptation

Adept at Adaptation
28" x 18", oil on canvas, 2020

Like a number of recent paintings, this one's also based on decades-old photo reference, but one I hadn't looked at in years and never attempted to paint until now. This post will cover the development of that car's engine and the old neon radio station sign.

That folded blue paper thing is the "blueprint" of a subdivision that appears on the back of Rush's Signals record.

THE BIG, NOISY ENGINE

I explained the reasons for making a Chevette with a big, noisy engine in my Hot Rod post, so we'll just cut to the chase, here...

Twin-engine power house.

My first idea was to have two engines in the Chevette, so for inspiration I started looking around at actual hot rods to see how things are done at 1:1 scale. We have a couple of books on Big Daddy Roth and his amazing custom vehicles (he's a great pinstriper, too!), and I eventually came across his Mysterion which had two engines. Rather than scrapping my idea ('cause it's been done!) I studied the Mysterion to see how I could make my 1/25 scale model look plausible.

Big Daddy Roth's Mysterion.

The problem with the twin-engine idea was that I would have to open up too much of the engine bay to accommodate them, removing too much of what I felt gave the Chevette its characteristic look. I suppose I could have chopped the front nose off the Chevette (and opened up the engine bay like most hot rods, including the Mysterion) and just attached it on an extended chassis beyond the engines. But I felt there still might be another option...

I subscribe to a lot of great model builders on YouTube and when I saw Dirk Pitt's crazy installation of a huge diesel engine on his Vicky D Rat Rod, I thought that might be the way to go for my build, too. I already had Revell's Kenworth W900 that I was going to use as a donor kit for various future builds and once I did a very early test fit of that engine in the Chevette I knew that was the way to go. Thanks, Dirk!

I bought this just for the engine.

Deletion/adjustment.

I used just about all the engine parts from the kit. I cut off that part on the right to make the engine fit the Chevette's tiny engine bay (let's pretend that part's still there, but underneath the dashboard, somewhere). Of course, I had to make it a little more complicated and a little weirder than this...

Greeblies.

I gotta be honest: I don't have a good understanding of how engines work or how they should look, realistically, so all my tweaks and additions are less practical elements and more in the realm of greeblies (details added to models to make them look more complex and believable, if not truly realistic). This works for me, and all kinds of justifications can be made for them. I'm happy with the strange complexity of it all and I think it adds to the bombastic nature of this project.

Details and weathering.

Having said all that above, I still like to have some kind of justification (at least in my own head) for the things I add, like all the weathering –the rest of the car was planned to be clean and shiny, as though recently restored, so why is the engine so gnarly and not equally clean and shiny like the Mysterion pictured earlier? Maybe this engine runs dirty no matter how often you clean it...maybe the body was recently restored, but this engine was installed before clean-up. It just doesn't matter to me; it's a fantasy car! I've built this for a dear friend (and for my own fun) and that's that.

I keep all the decals that I don't use on models for potential future use (I also buy decal sheets from time to time), so I had some interesting ones for this engine. Like the greeblies, they don't necessarily make sense, but they add to the overall verisimilitude.

Proper propeller.

When it came time to add the fan and radiator I decided to go even further into the realm of fantasy and just add a spare propeller from a Messerschmitt kit I was using as donor parts. The visual of this specific airplane part seemed to add even more noise, figuratively, to the whole assembly. Maybe it helps it go faster, too...
More details.

This is mostly just notes for myself for when I actually got to building this. I wanted to get down all my construction ideas so that the while vignette had some kind of design cohesion. From the get-go I wanted to include the sign inside a standard display case, so built it to fit (this drawing is even 1:1 with the final construct, while the pretend scale for it is 1:25 to match the car).

Rust close-up.

One aspect of scale modelling I didn't expect when I got back into it in 2015 was the faux finishing, i.e. painting one material to look like another. Here we have simple styrene plastic and, to me, it looks like rusty metal. It's been a few years (I should have written this as I built it), but I don't think I chipped the girders...I think I just painted the frame black then gave it a wash of rust-coloured acrylic paint, then added some rust-coloured chalk pastel dust for texture.
My dear friend, Tony, is turning 50 this year and I wanted to commemorate the event with a personal gift, something that he (and maybe two or three other people in our lives) would understand and appreciate to its fullest. I know him well enough and have known him long enough that I knew I'd think of something from our shared past that I could build as a scale model.

Long story short: as teenagers, from the mid-to-late-'80s, a handful of my friends and I pretended to have a "radio show" and we would record ourselves playing a multitude of characters in ridiculous scenarios (and we improvised 98% of everything). One of those characters (Ed Jones, not played by Tony) had a Chevette that sounded like it had a jet engine...for some reason. The reason it was a Chevette, however, was because Tony had one in real life.

That's why this model had to be a Chevette. And, since it was my spontaneous improvisation to "voice" the car's super engine sound effect, I felt it was my responsibility to bring that beast to life.

Box art.

Finding this particular model kit wasn't easy –or cheap– but it absolutely had to be a Chevette or the project would be meaningless.

I approached this build as though I owned a car customizing speed shop and Ed Jones called me up one day, asking if I would be able to install a Kenworth engine in a stock Chevette. And make it road worthy. And make it look cool. Well, here goes...
This model is 1/25 scale, which means it's minutely smaller than a 1/24 scale car (even within the same company there isn't a standard scale, but it's usually one or the other, go figure), and this, in conjunction with the Chevette being a compact car to begin with, made installing the gigantic engine a tricky feat.

Just look at that tiny Chevette engine! So small. So cute. So easy to dispose of into my spare parts box. I'd also be dispensing with the wheels as I would use white walls from another kit for the front, and dragster mag wheels for the back.

Very early test-fit.

Just placing the raw-plastic Kenworth engine in the raw-plastic Chevette engine bay was satisfying and exciting; I was on the right track, comedically, if not logically, engineering-wise.

The dashboard was super narrow once the window got installed that I had to dispense with my usual positioning of the 1986 Perly's Map Book of Toronto and place it on the back seat, instead.

Another element that had to be sacrificed because of the shortness of the dash was a computer that swung out on an arm over the passenger seat (the place where I had glued it on is still visible as a smudge in the pic above). There's a picture of it in place at the end of this post.
Other than it being a Chevette, I didn't try to replicate Tony's actual car, but rather what the one in our "radio show" might have looked like...or what Ed Jones might have ordered from my speed shop in the mid-'80s.
Supportive.

To make room for the massive engine, I had to dispense with some of what I felt gives cars their personality: their "face," that is, the front grille and headlight arrangement. Luckily, I was able to keep the headlights, but I needed to add supports to attach them to the now-chopped-up hood. I wanted to keep as much of the original car as possible.
Greeblies.

Those things on the roof are from a Messerschmitt kit that I bought for parts years ago. I don't remember what they do on that plane, and I'm not sure what they do here, but they look aerodynamic (at least that's what might appear on the speed shop's invoice!).
Test-fit (left).

The engine was completed first because I was sorta dragging my feet on the paint scheme for the car. I wanted a brand new, shiny metallic red paint job, and since clean and fresh isn't my usual modelling preference, I needed to practice clean and fresh on some other kits before getting back to this one.

I know a true hot rodder would keep the engine as spotless as the rest of the car, but I couldn't resist grunging it up. Maybe it's the nature of that retrofit engine that it gets grungy really fast and it's harder to keep clean than the rest of the car. Sure, why not?

I know flourescent colours are the stereotypical colours people think of regarding the '80s, but my recollection is there was still a lot of beige in that decade. Why Ed Jones would want a largely beige interior to a car he's customizing to be very flashy (no pun intended)

Ride-height confusion.

For some reason I did this test-fit without installing the interior tub and it made the rear wheels sit way too high. Just a few shots above this you can see a test-fit with the tub installed and the rear wheels look fine. Since the time between work sessions on this kit can be days (or weeks! or months!) at a time, my memory can be slack, it can play tricks, and this new low-riding situation had me concerned...

Adjustments.

So I decided I had to beef up the rear axle and raise the back end. Above I've added two strips of square styrene rod, a piece of sheet styrene, and a strip of C-channel for the new axle made from tube styrene, a piece of firm wire (inside the rod to mount the wheels) and those grey dragster bits.

Plausible-ish.

I then added kitbashed bits of engine parts to make it look like a plausible rear differential (this model isn't meant to be picked up, but you can still see a bit of the underside from the side).

Conceptually appropriate.

The main conceit of this car is that the engine sounds like a monster truck or even a jet so I added some tail pipes from another kit. I briefly considered beefing these up with some aluminum rods on the ends, but this was enough pipe.

Metallic red.

To avoid any airbrush mishaps, I decided it might be best if I used rattle cans to paint this car. I first used a red metallic then sprayed a few coats of a pearlescent clear coat to give it some extra flare.

Flame-broiled.

Every good hot rod needs flames, and the yellow engine will look great nested among this conflagration. With no real estate on the hood, I had to make every available space count –no matter how short or narrow– so I found a decal sheet with various sizes of flames that suited my needs.

Tiny Spider-man...

...does whatever a tiny spider can. Tony's a big Spider-Man fan so I created these miniature comics to be placed in the back seat. I consulted him on some of his favourite issues.

Completed tub.

Well, everything looks good here: computer riding up on the dashboard (I had high hopes for this, but when the glass was added, nothing would fit on the dash, including that Perly's), the cellular phone is installed and now has a cord, three classic Spider-Man comics carelessly tossed on the rear seat, the Perly's map book alongside them, and a couple of cases of beer in the hatchback (Hamster Beer and Hamster Light are further inside jokes...and that company's conveniently also celebrating a 50th Anniversary).

I was planning on handing this to Tony personally on or very near his birthday at the end of June 2020, but the global pandemic has changed these plans so this blog post will have to suffice until I can personally deliver it (there's no way I'm shipping this in the mail!).

Even as a young kid, I knew right away that the brilliant Joe Flaherty played Count Floyd, but it took me a while to realize Count Floyd was played by Floyd Robertson, the news anchor also played by Flaherty. And that's one of the many reasons I love SCTV: they created a world in which the characters inhabit together like a repertory company and this allows (among much else) for the real person Joe Flaherty to play the character Floyd Robertson and for Floyd Robertson to then play the character Count Floyd (which is a wonderful tribute to all the news anchors, sports and weather reporters, etc. of local news shows who doubled as early morning cartoon show or late nite horror movie show hosts).
Continuing my portrait series of my favourite SCTV characters, here's my rendition of the brilliant Andrea Martin's colourful and bizarre children's TV host, Mrs. Falbo. Her princess dress is pretty spectacular, but I wanted to add a bit more colour and reference the episode where she sings a song to teach us how to count to ten.

The design of the numbers is based directly on the ones the brilliant John Candy's Mr. Messenger (Falbo's sidekick/assistant) ran by with in the background, desperately trying to keep up with the fast pace of the song.

Here's my SCTV story:

One late Friday night (likely some time in 1979 or 1980), during one of the many, many sleepovers at my cousins' house, we tuned in to SCTV. I'm not sure I got all the jokes –certainly not all the references– but I knew it was something this 8- or 9- year-old liked.

I would keep up with SCTV for years, on whatever channel I could find it, and it was in the mid-'80s that I started noticing the name "Malabar" in the credits, listed as providing costumes (of course, the costume designer was the brilliant Juul Haalmeyer).

In 1990 I started attending the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) on McCaul Street (about midway between Queen and Dundas in Toronto) and, just one block north of Queen, was Malabar Costumes. The name recognition from watching countless hours of SCTV gave me a distant sense of vague connection: the art school I'm going to is on the same street as the costume shop that serviced my favourite comedy show. I never went inside Malabar during my two years at OCA, but I smiled just about every time I passed the shop.

While looking for work in 2003 I saw an ad looking for a costumer at, lo and behold, the Opera Department of Malabar Costumes on Brock Street (I mistook it for Brock Road in Pickering, much closer to my home than its actual location in downtown Toronto). For three years, I assembled costumes for many opera companies in Canada and the USA. Sometimes, my duties would take me to the HQ on McCaul St. (I finally -now, regularly- went inside that mythical building I passed hundreds of times over a decade earlier).

This door was on the main building
on McCaul and led to an alleyway.

Much of the crew at Malabar had been there for a long time and remembered the SCTV days. I heard a few stories about the cast and Juul, but my absolute favourite thing was seeing some of the costumes used on the show (much of which were stock items, like formal period suits and dresses). I got to see the Shmenge brothers shirts (with "John" and "Gene" still written on the inside) and I even got to try on one of Dr. Tongue's vests. It was magical.

So get this:
1970s: I see first-run SCTV as a kid;
1980s: grow to enjoy the show even more; notice Malabar credited as providing their costumes;
1990s: go to art school down the street from Malabar;
2000s: work at Malabar in the Opera Dept.;
2020s: paint portraits of my favourite SCTV characters.
I was assigned to document this year's Ice Box event (February 2020) in photos and video and I noticed, almost without fail, that my first few shots taken outside would be overexposed (if I had come from shooting indoors) and the first few shots taken inside would be underexposed (if I had come from shooting outside).

On the second weekend, Chef Chris Byrne and food stylist Ruth Gangbar were making maple taffy from local maple syrup on a makeshift apparatus recreating the methods used in sugar shacks. When reviewing my first few photos, I noticed this one of a young girls enjoying a sweet treat was way overexposed with everything but her red hair being blown out. I really liked the "minimalist use of negative space" that my incorrect camera settings "designed" for me, so I kept it to paint later on.
Maybe I'm just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, but sometimes my artwork makes people smile...and that's enough (for now) for me to keep the light on in the dark; maybe someone will find some fuel to keep going through the night.

I've had the photo reference for this painting for close to twenty years (taken on one of several road trips to New York City), but I never felt I had the wherewithal to paint it to my satisfaction. But recently, my experimentation has me getting out of a stylistic comfort zone, and I'm trying new things (including using my fingertips to apply paint and move it around (it really helped with the lights, here).

Also, symbolically, it felt like the right painting for right now; my first paragraph is how I feel and all there is I currently have to say.
Much like the situation with my Sleepy Fox painting, this one was also done for a family member's birthday. My brother-in-law, Tim, reached a milestone (it's on the jersey), but, since everyone has to stay away from each other because of the pandemic, he could only share the special day with his wife and two kids.

I loosely based my still life on "Still Life on a Table" by Willemsz Heda from around 1644 (though, I basically just used the table, tablecloth, and the light-coloured fabric that's now underneath the baseball glove). Then I added a bunch of his favourite things* in a satisfying composition –all intended to put a smile on his face the day he turned 40. And it worked! He'll get the painting itself when it's dry (and safe) enough to send to Ottawa.

Happy birthday, Tim!
Continuing the practice of revisiting older photo reference I've shot (and, sometimes, painted already) this painting is based on a photo of my friend, Trish, from way back in the mid-1990s. Below is the watercolour version, which is okay, but it's very small, so there's less detail...and I think my new oil version is more vibrant and alive (which is a good sign, considering they're about 25 years apart).
One of my nieces turned 8 years old this year, but in the midst of pandemic-induced social distancing, she wasn't able to have her fox-themed birthday party. So I made this cute little fox painting for her and the accompanying video to help ease a bit of the disappointment I knew she'd be feeling.

Abdicate

17" x 14", oil on Bristol board, 2020

This painting is based on photo reference I shot in the late '90s and used as part of my Operation: Waterstorm project from 1998 (see below). I challenged myself to paint one watercolour per week for the entire year (I ended up painting 63 in total). I had a suspicion that painting regularly would improve my skills and it turned out to be true; the only way to get better at something is to keep doing it (it's also important to be mindful throughout and learn from your mistakes; the improvement is cumulative, but there will be some duds along the way).

This current project (which, uncharacteristically, for me doesn't have a name) is very similar, even in its origin: on New Year's Eve, 2019, I decided to paint as many pictures in 2020 (and beyond) as I could, all the while filming myself and then uploading time lapse videos to my YouTube channel. As of this posting, I've done 14 paintings (and videos) which puts me at just over a painting per week on average (I have a bathroom renovation and pandemic to contend with, or there would be a few more by now).

As with the watercolour project from 1998, I'm finding some improvement in my paintings (so far, just oils, but I'll eventually paint some watercolours because I still love that medium very much). I'm trying some new techniques and Bristol board is an interesting surface to paint on.

This was the first time I used this reference image...but not the last: I abstracted it in Photoshop, then painted that image in oils nearly a decade later (below).
Of course, this wouldn't be the last time I use this photo reference; after Abdicate, I'll be using it in a larger oil painting to be done in the next couple of months (and there'll be a time lapse video for that, as well).
I've painted my friend, Ashley, more than any other model I've used and this particular pose had been sort of "on deck" for about two decades, making many appearances in my sketchbook in various compositions with various items joining her, but only appearing in one other painting until now.
In many sketches over the years, I've put all kinds of stuff on and around Ashley, and I gave her a full-colour sunflower "tattoo" when I used her in this painting from my Sunflowers series (about a year or so before I started painting in oils as well as watercolours):

I've been revisiting much of my voluminous photo reference that I've been shooting since the early 1990s (on film until around 2012, then digital ever since), and this pose came up yet again and, as accompaniment, I finally made a decision and used a snapshot I took of a cat while visiting my friends years ago. The cat's name was Cole...and I almost named this "Cole and Ash" as a fun play on words.
There's not much to say about this painting, seeing as it's a variation of Downcast (bot painted concurrently (it was a bit of a challenge keeping the two separate as far as the video files go)) with the addition of an empty word balloon (which was painted in a few graceful strokes, I must say –visible in the video below).
I tried some extensive palette knife painting on this one to give it a bright, reflected-sunlight glow behind the figure. It turned out okay, but made me change my mind about the colour of the sky (which began as a gradient from blue at the top to very light blue at the horizon) – you can see the swerve in the video below. In the end, I like the hazy, summer-day-approaching-sunset look.

I scratched out the word balloon and heart with the back end of a paint brush (as I have been doing for my "m2" signature for a few years, now.
One of the main purposes of this "time lapse video" exercise is to keep me painting regularly and, by doing so, I hope to learn a few things and get better at it. So, watching these videos is a fascinating (for me, anyway) look into my development as a painter as I try new techniques.

To save space I've begun experimenting with painting on Bristol board and that means the surface needs to be prepped, and this is how I did that: after I pencilled in the subject/s I covered the paper with clear gesso, then taped the sheet to a hard surface (which produced that uneven border), then covered that with orange acrylic (like I usually do), then paint away. Even after these preparatory steps, the surface isn't what I'm used to working on...it seems more porous...but I've managed to adapt and make it work for me.

With this painting, I've used my friend, Kimberley, once again from a recent photo shoot and the background was made up as I painted it –which is highly unusual for me, since I like to plan as much as I can before even the pencilling stage– but I really like how the lighting effects turned out and the expressive nature of the background lends a kinetic aspect that works well with the pose.
When I embarked on this new project to record myself painting pictures then upload time lapse videos to my YouTube channel, I began my usual practice of rummaging through my sketchbooks and photo reference for material. I kept coming across pictures of Carrie Fisher and, although I've painted her as part of a group in Visible, Audible Heat, and did a stylized painting of The Princess (for which I used a friend), I thought it'd be fun to paint a picture of what's in my mind's eye when I think of "Princess Leia," that is, Carrie Fisher in her white outfit with these braids she wore in The Empire Strikes Back.
